A Trans Teen Sought Therapy—His Therapist Is Accused of Raping Him
Prosecutors say the alleged assault happened during a session in a Midtown Manhattan office, raising urgent questions about therapeutic power, supervision and the protection of trans minors in care.
A 17-year-old trans boy entered a Manhattan therapist’s office for mental-health care. Prosecutors allege that the clinician responsible for treating him raped him during that session.
The teenager had been receiving treatment from Remington Yhap at Liberation Psychotherapy in Midtown Manhattan. According to the criminal complaint, the alleged assault occurred on June 15, 2026, inside an Avenue of the Americas office where the boy had been placed under Yhap’s professional care.
Yhap, 47, was arrested on July 29, 2026, on three counts of rape and a charge of endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment, and the case remains pending. He is due back in court on October 1, 2026.
The criminal proceedings will determine whether prosecutors can prove the charges. The public record already identifies the setting in which the alleged harm occurred: a private therapy session between an adult clinician and a minor patient.
That setting carries an extraordinary imbalance of power. Therapists are granted access to a young patient’s fears, personal history, family circumstances and vulnerabilities. They control the boundaries of the session and hold professional authority over a person seeking help. Prosecutors allege that Yhap sexually assaulted the teenager within that treatment relationship.
The boy’s trans identity did not produce the alleged danger. The alleged danger came from an adult professional entrusted with his care. But the betrayal of a treatment relationship can carry additional consequences for trans youth who already face rejection, discrimination and difficulty finding clinicians who will respect them.
The teenager reportedly received treatment from Yhap from September 2025 through July 2026. That extended relationship raises urgent institutional questions. What supervision governed Yhap’s treatment of minors? When did the practice learn about the arrest? Was he removed from contact with clients? Were current patients and their families given a safe way to report concerns?
The available case reporting does not answer those questions. It also does not establish whether the practice, a professional regulator or any supervising clinician has begun reviewing Yhap’s work, prior patient contact or treatment records.
Those gaps matter because private therapy sessions place minors beyond the immediate view of parents, colleagues and other witnesses. A practice serving young patients must have clear safeguards for professional boundaries, supervision, complaints and emergency removal from client contact when serious allegations arise.
That scrutiny must remain directed at the accused clinician and the institutions responsible for overseeing patient safety. One provider’s alleged conduct does not discredit LGBTQ+ therapists or trans-affirming mental-health care. Trans youth need competent and accessible care. Protecting that care requires confronting alleged abuse without allowing a criminal case to become ammunition against the patients who depend on it.
Using the teenager’s suffering to attack affirming care would shift responsibility away from the adult accused of harming him. It would also punish other trans youth by making trustworthy treatment harder to find. Accountability means examining the evidence, the provider’s conduct, the safeguards surrounding his work and the response of every institution responsible for protecting minor patients.
Authorities reportedly believe there may be additional victims, and the investigation remains open. That possibility places responsibility on investigators, practice leadership and professional regulators to determine whether other patients may have been exposed to harm and whether anyone trying to report concerns encountered barriers.
The teenager is entitled to privacy. He should not have to surrender his identity or endure graphic public retellings for the allegations to be treated with seriousness. The central record is enough: a trans minor entered therapy expecting care, and prosecutors accuse the therapist entrusted with treating him of committing sexual violence during a session.
The court will determine Yhap’s legal guilt. The institutions surrounding his work must still account for what protections existed, who was responsible for enforcing them and whether every current and former patient has been given a safe path to report harm.
