The 17-year-old trans student and his mother repeatedly sought help as classmates harassed him, staff failed to stop it, and requests for safer conditions went unanswered.
Parents teaching their children to hate those who are different and to use cruelty against them are evidently not intelligent enough to feel ashamed. The school was let off too easy. It seems like someone involved in school policy was a hate filled bigot.
The hate was taught at home, carried into school, and reinforced by adults who failed to protect Myles after repeated warnings. The school was let off too easily because institutional negligence helped create the conditions that destroyed his life.
That’s egregious and tragic, just unimaginable. When we learned later about our daughter’s HS bullying, she said she couldn’t tell us at the time or report it to the school because it would be like narking on the prison guards, only make it worse. I know the kids’ parents, and they are not hateful people. It doesn’t excuse it, we need to keep trying, but humans can be horrible to each other.
Your daughter understood that reporting the bullying could make the adults close ranks and intensify the harm. That fear is exactly why schools must act before children learn that asking for help only makes them less safe.
Also that the bullies would find ways around it, even if the school tried to help (as you point out, not a given). They’re not the first generation to do it, and haters will find ways to make people suffer, even if they have to get someone elected to president to do it at scale.
Sickening… are the teachers/officials NOT court-mandated reporters in the state/county/city/school district ? I was a “student” & and the school sports information officer at my community college and I signed that paperwork & background check… is that why they settled, because all of ‘em could’ve been sued individually ? Wonder if anything has changed at that school since… 🤔😡
The school had repeated warnings that Myles was being targeted and still failed to protect him. A settlement cannot erase that failure—the district should publicly account for who ignored those reports, what consequences followed, and exactly what changed to stop another trans student from being abandoned.
Myles deserved protection, safety, and the chance to grow into the life ahead of him. His school knew he was being bullied and still left him alone inside that harm.
Stupid High school kids I hope they think about what they did to him as they grow older and wiser. We do dumb things in school we use to hide a girls underwear in the shower in PE. At 70 now I feel bad we did that.
