Vincent Anthony Siqueiros, 42, and Cameron Davis Capara, 33, were killed just after 12:30 a.m. outside Venture-N, a longtime gay bar in Tucson. They died in the parking lot of a place that had served LGBTQ people for decades as a gathering point where friendships and chosen families were built.
Vincent was remembered as someone who made people feel included almost immediately. Friends described him as friendly, kindhearted, prepared, and eager to pull new people into the circle around him. One close friend said Vincent could make a bad day better simply by being there.
Cameron was remembered by his mother as deeply passionate about social justice and helping others. After his death, the size of the community around him became visible through the people who gathered, shared memories, and added to the memorial outside Venture-N.
The men were not killed in a personal dispute that was later labeled a hate crime. Tucson police say the shooter had no apparent connection to either victim, and investigators recovered evidence showing the shooting was a targeted attack motivated by hatred toward the LGBTQIA+ community.
That distinction changes the meaning of the attack. Police found no apparent relationship linking Vincent or Cameron to the shooter. The evidence instead points toward the LGBTQ community itself as the object of the hatred behind the killings.
Venture-N had been part of Tucson’s LGBTQ community since the early 1980s. Regulars described it as one of the places where people could gather, build friendships and chosen families, celebrate, and heal. Vincent and Cameron were killed at the edge of a space carrying decades of that history.
Investigators also recovered a note containing the names of several other LGBTQIA+-associated businesses. Police later said additional evidence indicated the shooter acted alone and confirmed the Venture-N shooting was motivated by anti-LGBTQ hate. The record does not establish that every business named was a confirmed future attack target, but the discovery extended the threat beyond a single location and led police to contact the businesses identified.
The killings therefore reached beyond what happened in one parking lot. Vincent and Cameron were dead, a longstanding LGBTQ gathering place had become the site of targeted anti-LGBTQ violence, and evidence recovered afterward connected the attacker’s hatred to other businesses associated with the same community.
Flowers, candles, photographs, and handwritten messages soon covered part of the wall outside Venture-N as people came to remember Vincent and Cameron. The memorial kept the focus where it belonged: on two lives taken in an attack aimed at the community around them.
The accountability question now reaches beyond identifying who pulled the trigger. Police have established the anti-LGBTQ motive. What remains is the reality Tucson’s queer community has been forced to confront: Vincent and Cameron were killed where LGBTQ people had gathered for decades, and the evidence recovered afterward showed that the hatred behind their deaths was not confined to them alone.
