David Thomas Byington has been indicted in the killing of Lucas “RedBeard” Knapp, a 39-year-old trans man, farmer, builder, educator, and beloved community member in rural New Mexico.
It is heartbreaking because none of this should be normal. Trans people should be alive, safe, and protected — not mourned after violence that never should have happened.
Yes. This violence is not random, and treating it like isolated tragedy is how the pattern stays protected. Structural harm requires structural accountability — from the people in power and from everyone refusing to look away.
The killing in Seattle at UW is a perfect example. The killer had been on the prowl days before, and even after (!!!!) the murder, trying to get into locked homes and university buildings. If the laundry room and building where the murder occurred had been secure, Juniper might not have been murdered.
Exactly. Juniper’s murder was not just one act of violence — it was every failed protection around her that left danger moving freely until it reached her.
