I am struggling to understand why even the funding was provided to go before the highest court all so that a (relative) handful of children, already victimized by their own bodies, could be prevented from going out and playing on a team. The amount of hate and prejudice that went into this is shocking.

This was never about fairness. It was about spending power, money, and legal machinery to make trans kids feel hunted for existing.
Well it was the ACLU representing two trans identifying males who brought the case to the court, so……

The title of your post is factually incorrect. The courts decision allows states to exclude males from female sports, not all sports.
